Interpretation:

Jerry: I'm not exactly sure where to start with this song Darryl. My first impressions are that this guy is with a girl that is a skanky lying pothead, and he knows she's not worth it. But then he jumps into the "I'll never let you go" stuff, which makes me wonder if he's just a masochistic freak. Then to further confuse the chorus he talks about turning your backs on each other and breaking promises to your mother. Now the turning your backs on each other is contradictory to never letting one go, and no matter who you are, breaking promises to your mother is bad!

Darryl: Jerry, you ignorant slut! This song is really pretty transparent. You obviously failed to notice that his statements aren't just about one person. And I use the word "his" as a convenience, since there's no indication that the song is from the point of view of a man. The singer is very concerned about the relationship between the listener and a third party. All we know about the third party is that she's female and she's highly influenced by the listener. "She's sneaky and smoked out" refers to his friend/lover/wife/relative who has more than likely become a pothead from hanging around the skank. The skank, of course, couldn't care less about the pothead and will stab her in the back if the opportunity presents itself.

Jerry: Interesting separation. It does shed a new light on the lyrics if it is possible that the writer could have been so deep. But that leads me back to confusion. So what you are saying is the singer is most likely a friend of the listener and third party, explaining to the listener (hopefully a male), why the third party (obviously a female) left him? I'm going to go out on a limb and make a guess. I believe that the listener and third party alternate. It seems relatively safe to consider this relationship as (Guy=Listener) (Girl=Third Party) (Friend of Both=Singer). I'd be willing to take a tiny step into my own reality and throw in a possibility. What if the singer were sleeping with the third party of the first verse, and now he's explaining what happened and why it happened to the listener. At this point most of the verses almost fall into place. He never let them turn their backs on each other because they were all friends. In the middle verse about all of their friends being gone, I believe he is singing to both, and the singer isn't even sure if they (he used "we") will remain friends. Then in the last verse imagine the singer singing to the girl and the guy is now the third party. There are obvious reference to girl things like the mood rings, bracelets, and beads when referring to the listener, and then there's the "pulse like sonar" comment. I can only hope there is some opposite sex stuff going on! I think that's getting pretty close to where the song was leading me, now I'll just be waiting for you and your crack pipe to bring a new messed up light to the story. And by the way, WHAT THE HELL is with the breaking a promise to your mother line?!

Darryl: I was hoping my hints would lead you to see the real meaning behind this song. Okay, let me spell it out. For the sake of argument, we'll assume the singer is male. He has had a close relationship with the skank in the past. They were close friends and probably lovers for a short time. Unfortunately for the skank, the singer then fell in love with the skank's mother. The skank, of course, didn't react well to this. She apparently promised her mother sometime in the past that she'd be okay with the situation, but is now sinking into bitterness and meanness. Her behavior has pushed away all of their friends and caused her mother no end of pain and grief. Her mother has turned to drugs to escape the torment. The singer would love to just give up on the skank, but can't because of his love's feelings for her. The skank would also love the singer to give up on her, since that would give her a greater feeling of righteousness and victimhood.

Jerry: Ah HA! I finally have coaxed you into publicly proving you are a complete PERV! Only a sick twisted deviant mind could come up with something THAT sick! Muahahahaha!!! Jerry 1, Darryl 0!

Jerry - Summary: I guess you should just read Darryl's last comment. I can't get much deeper into a song than that... (Nor would I want to!) Well.. Off to the next one, see y'all then!

Third Eye Blind - Never Let You Go

Woo
There's every good reason for letting you go
She's sneaky and smoked out
And it's starting to show
I'll never let you go
I'll never let you go
I never let you go
I never let you turn around, your back on each other
That's a good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other

You say that I'e changed
Well maybe I did
But even if I've changed
What's wrong with it
I'll never let you go
I'll never let you go
I never let you go
I never let you turn around, your back on each other
That's a good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other

And our friends are gone and gone
And all the time moves on and on
And all I know is it's wrong, it's wrong
And all I know is it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong
If there's a reason, it's lost on me
Maybe we'll be friends, I guess we'll see
I never let you go
I'll never let you go
I'll never let you go
I never let you go
Turn around, your back on each other
It's a good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around let's turn on each other
Good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other
That's a good idea, break a promise to your mother
Turn around your back on each other
What a good idea...

I remember the stupid things, the mood rings, the bracelets and the beads
Nickels and dimes, yours and mine, did you cash in all your dreams
You don't dream for me, no, (goodbye, goodbye) you don't dream for me, no
But I still feel you pulse like sonar from the days in the waves
That girl is like a sunburn
I would like to say
The girl is like a sunburn
I would like to say
She's like a sunburn
(She's like a sunburn)
She's like a sunburn
